The Woolworths veteran will join as CEO-designate in February 2027, beginning an extended leadership transition as Pick n Pay works to restore its supermarket business.

By Black Business Review

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Pick n Pay has selected veteran retail executive Spencer Sonn as its next chief executive, placing an experienced grocery operator at the center of the company’s effort to rebuild profitability and regain competitive strength.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Pick n Pay has selected veteran retail executive Spencer Sonn as its next chief executive, placing Spencer Sonn at the center of the company’s effort to rebuild profitability and regain competitive strength.

Spencer Sonn: A New Era for Pick n Pay

The South African retailer announced Sept. 22 that Spencer Sonn will become CEO-designate effective Feb. 1, 2027. He will initially work alongside current CEO Sean Summers, whose contract runs through May 2028, before assuming leadership of the group. This arrangement gives Spencer Sonn approximately 15 months to participate in the recovery before taking full responsibility.

Spencer Sonn will lead this initiative, focusing on operational excellence.

Under Spencer Sonn’s leadership, the company aims to enhance the overall customer experience.

For Pick n Pay, the appointment connects two critical challenges: repairing the business today and establishing leadership capable of sustaining that recovery tomorrow.

Sonn brings a 26-year career at Woolworths South Africa, including five years as managing director of its food division. He currently serves as Woolworths’ chief customer officer, a position he has held since April 2025. His background places food retailing, customer experience and operating execution at the center of his qualifications.

His international experience includes leading Woolworths New Zealand, a business separate from Woolworths South Africa. That adds exposure to another grocery market and experience managing retail operations beyond his home country.

The strategic logic is clear: Pick n Pay needs leadership that understands how decisions about product selection, pricing, availability and service translate into repeat visits. Sonn’s experience suggests the company is prioritizing those operating fundamentals as it prepares for its next chapter.

Spencer Sonn’s strategic vision will be crucial for implementing these changes effectively.

The assignment comes with substantial pressure.

Pick n Pay’s recovery has required changes across its finances, leadership structures and store portfolio. In its results for the year ended March 1, 2026, the company said three elements of its turnaround were largely complete: recapitalization, re-establishing leadership structures and resetting its store estate. Its remaining priorities focused on restoring competitiveness.

Those changes provide a foundation. The harder test is whether they produce a stronger supermarket business that customers choose consistently.

The financial results illustrate the uneven nature of that recovery. Group turnover increased 3.4% on a comparable 52-week basis, supported by 12.3% growth at Boxer. Pick n Pay turnover declined 1.6%, which the company attributed to store closures, while company-owned Pick n Pay supermarkets recorded like-for-like sales growth of 3.9%.

The distinction matters. Sales across a shrinking store portfolio can fall even as the remaining stores improve. Evaluating the turnaround therefore requires attention to both the quality of the surviving business and its capacity to generate sustainable earnings.

Boxer has also played a central role in the financial restructuring. The discount retailer listed separately on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in November 2024. Pick n Pay subsequently completed a further R4.7 billion Boxer share placement in May 2026, strengthening its balance sheet while retaining control of the business.

Spencer Sonn has publicly signaled his commitment to ensuring a successful transition.

For Sonn, the task will be to help convert that financial flexibility into durable operating improvements.

The extended handover could prove valuable. Working inside the business before becoming CEO gives him time to assess store performance, understand supplier relationships and build credibility with employees. It also creates an opportunity to identify which recovery initiatives deserve acceleration and where adjustments may be necessary.

That is an assessment of the transition’s potential, rather than a guarantee of its outcome. A lengthy succession period still requires clear responsibilities and consistent direction.

Sonn has publicly signaled his willingness to contribute to the existing recovery effort.

Ultimately, Spencer Sonn’s effectiveness will determine the long-term success of Pick n Pay.

“I am looking forward to playing my part in continuing the turnaround and being part of the family,” he said, according to BusinessTech’s reporting on the announcement.

For suppliers, entrepreneurs and other businesses watching major African retailers, the appointment deserves attention because leadership decisions can eventually shape purchasing priorities, distribution relationships and investment. However, the announcement itself does not establish any new supplier program or procurement opportunity.

The immediate question is execution.

Investors and industry observers will have reason to watch whether sales improvements translate into stronger profitability, whether customers respond to changes in the stores and whether the leadership transition preserves momentum.

Sonn’s arrival offers Pick n Pay an experienced successor and time to prepare him for the role. His eventual record will be measured in the everyday performance of the business: dependable stores, returning customers and earnings that demonstrate the recovery can last.

The HBCU Experience Movement has published 35 books documenting the achievements, traditions and personal journeys of alumni while directing financial support to historically Black colleges and universities.

Dr. Ashley Little is turning the stories of historically Black college and university graduates into something larger than a publishing catalog. She is building an economic and cultural platform designed to preserve HBCU history, elevate alumni voices and generate financial support for the institutions that helped shape generations of Black leaders.

Dr. Ashley Little emphasizes the importance of sharing these narratives to inspire future scholars and leaders.

Little, a North Carolina A&T State University graduate, founded The HBCU Experience Movement as what the organization describes as the first Black-owned company dedicated to publishing books featuring prominent HBCU alumni while financially supporting historically Black institutions.

The company has published 35 books, with additional titles in development. Its growing collection includes alumni stories from North Carolina A&T, the Southern University System, Virginia State University, Grambling State University, Prairie View A&M University, Tuskegee University, Tennessee State University, Alabama State University and Fayetteville State University.

The movement has also expanded beyond books devoted to individual universities. Special editions celebrate HBCU band members, dancers, drum majors, campus royalty and other important parts of HBCU culture.

In this way, Dr. Ashley Little is leading a cultural renaissance for HBCUs.

Its latest release, The HBCU Experience: The HBCU Drum Major Alumni Edition, continues that mission by documenting the experiences of alumni who helped lead and represent HBCU marching bands—institutions within institutions that have shaped American music, performance and culture.

Turning Alumni Stories Into Institutional Support

Through her efforts, Dr. Ashley Little is creating a lasting impact on HBCU communities.

Many alumni, inspired by Dr. Ashley Little, are eager to share their own stories and experiences.

Dr. Ashley Little: Championing HBCU Narratives

Dr. Ashley Little’s vision aligns with the goals of alumni to foster a deeper connection with their alma maters.

The business model connects storytelling with giving. Alumni participating in the publishing projects make an initial contribution supporting the featured institution, while proceeds from books sold through Amazon are also used to benefit participating HBCUs.

According to the organization, The HBCU Experience Movement has invested tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships and endowments supporting HBCUs and their students.

By participating in this movement, alumni are following in the footsteps of Dr. Ashley Little.

Dr. Ashley Little’s passion for education fuels her mission and inspires others.

“Our goal is to continue to create a global movement of HBCU alumni who share their stories each year while giving back to their prestigious historically Black colleges and universities,” Little said. “Through these stories, we hope to encourage, uplift and support the next generation while showing how our HBCUs have molded us into the people we are today.”

Little said the idea emerged from her concern about the challenges some institutions face in engaging younger graduates and building long-term habits of alumni giving.

“I saw there was a problem with young alumni giving back and wanted to provide a creative solution to help increase young alumni giving and student enrollment,” she said. “We have to continue to invest in our HBCUs and continue to create our seats at the table. I believe it is important for HBCU graduates to give back, share and document our stories.”

Dr. Ashley Little’s accolades exemplify her commitment to this important cause.

Many view Dr. Ashley Little as a vital force in the preservation of HBCU history.

That approach makes the company more than a traditional publishing operation. It gives alumni an opportunity to become published authors, helps schools preserve firsthand accounts of their impact and creates another channel through which graduates can contribute financially.

Building a National HBCU Platform

The initiative led by Dr. Ashley Little is redefining how alumni engage with their institutions.

With Dr. Ashley Little at the helm, the movement is gaining national attention.

Little brings an extensive entrepreneurial and leadership background to the movement. She is a 34-time best-selling author, TEDx speaker, fashion model and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

She was selected for the Forbes Next 1000 in 2021 and has received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Her other honors include recognition as one of Georgia’s 100 Women of Excellence by the Georgia House of Representatives. She also served as Ms. Georgia Global Continental 2021 and Ms. Global Continental 2022.

Alumni are inspired by Dr. Ashley Little’s dedication to highlighting their shared narratives.

The HBCU Experience Movement and its participating authors have received several publishing and communications honors, including a Black Authors Matter TV Award, an Anthem Award, Communicator Awards recognition and an International Book Award from American Book Fest.

The collection has also been included in WorldCat, the international catalog that connects library collections and services around the world.

The movement received municipal recognition in Houston when the late Mayor Sylvester Turner issued a proclamation designating Aug. 13 as The HBCU Experience Day. The organization has also received recognition from congressional and senatorial offices.

Its work has been featured by national media organizations including Forbes, Black Enterprise, EBONY, REVOLT, NBC, FOX and CBS. Businesses from across the country have joined the initiative as partners and sponsors, helping the company broaden its reach.

Dr. Ashley Little’s approach highlights the collective strength of the HBCU community.

The BBR Assessment

Through her leadership, Dr. Ashley Little is cultivating a new generation of advocates for HBCUs.

The HBCU Experience Movement stands at the intersection of publishing, education, philanthropy and cultural preservation.

Its strongest business advantage is the depth of the HBCU alumni network. Each university, graduating class, professional association, fraternity, sorority, marching band and campus organization represents a potential community of contributors, readers, sponsors and donors.

The company is also converting personal testimony into an institutional asset. Stories that might otherwise remain in private conversations, family histories or alumni gatherings are being documented in books that can reach students, libraries, researchers and future generations.

For HBCUs, that work matters. Alumni stories help demonstrate the value of the institutions in human terms—through careers launched, businesses created, communities served and barriers broken. The financial contributions connected to the books add a practical dimension to that legacy-building mission.

“Our voices and stories are powerful and need to be heard,” Little said.

Through The HBCU Experience Movement, those voices are becoming part of a growing archive—one that celebrates the past while investing in the future of historically Black colleges and universities.

“We don’t have a knowledge problem—we have an access problem,” Cummings said. “Women are capable of building wealth, but too many have never been given the education, encouragement or community to begin. This initiative is about changing that.”

Making Investing More Accessible

Cassandra Cummings believes in the power of community to foster financial growth.

The Rich Auntie Wealth Initiative introduces women to investing through several beginner-friendly resources, including the free Girlfriend’s Investor Personality Quiz, live educational experiences and the upcoming 3-Day Bag Builder Options Bootcamp.

Cassandra Cummings invites partnerships to broaden the reach of financial education.

The investor personality quiz is designed to help participants better understand their financial goals, decision-making styles and comfort with risk. From there, women can explore educational opportunities that match their experience and interests.

The Bag Builder Options Bootcamp will introduce participants to investing fundamentals while helping them determine whether options trading is appropriate for their broader wealth-building strategies.

Although options can be complicated and carry substantial risk, the initiative emphasizes education, preparation and informed decision-making. Its larger purpose is not simply to teach women how to make trades but to help them develop a stronger understanding of wealth, investing and financial responsibility.

Creating a Ripple Effect

The impact of Cummings’ work can be seen in women such as Realtor Sheneka Fields. When Fields enrolled in Cummings’ Build-A-Bag program, her initial goal was to understand the stock market and become more confident about investing.

That experience eventually inspired Fields to establish Black Girls in Trading, a growing community that helps other women learn about investing and pursue financial independence.

“Attending Cassandra’s Bootcamp gave me the confidence to continue my investing education through Build-A-Bag,” Fields said. “Now I have the opportunity to help women in my own community take that same first step. It’s truly a full-circle moment.”

For Cummings, that ripple effect is one of the most important results of her work. Women who receive financial education can take what they learn back to their families, professional networks and communities, allowing the impact to extend beyond an individual investor.

“My greatest accomplishment isn’t teaching women how to trade,” Cummings said. “It’s watching them become confident enough to build wealth, lead their own communities and help other women believe they can do the same.”

Cassandra Cummings is leading the charge for women in investing.

Combining Education With Community

Many financial education programs focus primarily on delivering information. The Stocks & Stilettos Society takes a broader approach by combining financial education with accountability, encouragement and community.

That distinction matters because investing can appear intimidating to people who have not grown up discussing stocks, retirement accounts or wealth-building strategies. The language alone can make the financial markets seem inaccessible.

By creating a supportive learning environment, Cummings wants women to feel comfortable asking questions, examining their financial habits and taking practical steps without being judged for what they do not yet know.

“The first investment many women need to make isn’t in the stock market,” Cummings added. “It’s in believing they’re capable of building wealth.”

The Rich Auntie Wealth Initiative is encouraging women to take at least one meaningful step this summer. That step could include completing the Girlfriend’s Investor Personality Quiz, attending an educational event, participating in the bootcamp or simply beginning to learn how investing works.

A National Call for Partners

The Stocks & Stilettos Society is inviting churches, sororities, alumni associations, employers, nonprofit organizations, community groups, podcast hosts, media outlets and business leaders to support the campaign.

Participating organizations can introduce women in their communities to the free investor personality quiz and other beginner-friendly educational resources. They can also host conversations, share information and help remove some of the fear and uncertainty surrounding investing.

Through these partnerships, Cummings hopes to expand access to financial education and reach women who may not normally encounter investment programs through traditional financial institutions.

The campaign’s goal of engaging 25,000 women is ambitious, but its message is straightforward: wealth-building starts with access, education and the confidence to begin.

Africa’s largest initial public offering gives ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to own shares in one of the continent’s most consequential industrial assets.

By Black Business Review

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote has officially opened Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals to public investors, transforming a closely watched listing plan into the largest initial public offering in African history.

Aliko Dangote has established himself as a key player in Nigeria’s economic landscape, reinforcing the importance of local investment through initiatives like this refinery.

The offering seeks to raise approximately $1.6 billion through its base issuance and could generate as much as $2.1 billion if demand exceeds expectations and the company exercises an option to issue additional shares. The transaction values the refinery at close to $49 billion, according to the company prospectus reported by Reuters.

The investment opportunity provided by Aliko Dangote allows everyday Nigerians to participate in a significant economic endeavor.

Dangote is offering roughly 3% of the refinery to public investors. The offering has been marketed as a “people’s IPO,” with a minimum subscription of 10 shares priced at 525 naira each. That places the minimum investment at approximately $4, making the offering accessible to a far broader group than the institutional investors traditionally associated with major industrial transactions.

For Dangote, the low entry threshold is about more than raising capital. It represents an effort to give ordinary Nigerians an ownership stake in an asset that has already begun reshaping the country’s energy market.

The public offering follows a July private placement that raised $2.5 billion from institutional investors, including the Africa Finance Corporation, sovereign wealth funds and development finance institutions. That earlier transaction valued the refinery at approximately $40 billion. The higher valuation attached to the IPO reflects the company’s growing production, profitability and strategic importance.

Aliko Dangote’s contributions extend beyond this refinery, influencing various sectors across the continent.

From Planned Listing to Live Transaction

The Impact of Aliko Dangote on Nigeria’s Economy

Black Business Review previously identified the refinery’s proposed public listing as one of the most important capital-market developments to watch in Africa. The Sept. 14 launch moves the story decisively forward: Investors can now submit orders, capital is being raised and the refinery is preparing to trade on the Nigerian Exchange.

The subscription period is expected to remain open through Oct. 13, with public trading potentially beginning in late November.

Built for an estimated $20 billion, the Lagos-based refinery processes approximately 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Dangote plans to invest heavily in expanding that capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029, which would place the facility among the largest refineries in the world.

The IPO proceeds are expected to help finance that expansion and strengthen the refinery’s ability to raise capital for future growth.

The facility’s emergence has already changed Nigeria’s relationship with the global energy market. Nigeria has long ranked among Africa’s largest crude-oil producers but remained heavily dependent on imported gasoline, diesel and other refined products. The Dangote refinery was built to close that industrial gap by processing more Nigerian crude closer to home.

In 2026, Nigeria’s gasoline imports reportedly fell sharply as the refinery increased domestic production. Dangote has also become a significant supplier of jet fuel, diesel and gasoil to markets across Africa and Europe.

A Profitable Industrial Platform

The services provided by Aliko Dangote have positioned Nigeria as a competitive player in the global market.

Future listings by Aliko Dangote’s companies will further enhance market dynamics and investment opportunities.

Aliko Dangote’s vision for the refinery includes innovations aimed at boosting efficiency and production.

This IPO led by Aliko Dangote signals a shift in how African industries can attract investments.

For many Nigerians, investing in Aliko Dangote’s refinery offers a rare chance to be part of a monumental economic change.

The offering reaches the market as the refinery reports a dramatic financial turnaround. According to figures contained in its prospectus, the business recorded more than $13 billion in revenue and approximately $1.82 billion in net profit during the first half of 2026. That compares with a reported $476 million loss for all of 2025.

Ultimately, Aliko Dangote’s efforts are paving the way for a more robust industrial framework in Africa.

Global supply disruptions have contributed to stronger demand and refining margins, but the financial results also demonstrate the enormous commercial potential of an African-owned industrial platform operating at global scale.

The IPO reflects Aliko Dangote’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape through local initiatives.

In conclusion, Aliko Dangote’s vision emphasizes the importance of domestic investment in driving growth.

The refinery reportedly supplied about 80,000 barrels of jet fuel per day to Europe during the second quarter of 2026. That volume helped address a significant regional supply shortage and made the refinery one of Europe’s most important external jet-fuel suppliers.

Dangote has also indicated that a secondary U.S. listing could follow within three to four years. He said he eventually wants to list every company within the Dangote conglomerate, whose interests include cement, sugar, salt and other industrial operations.

Why This IPO Matters

This transaction is bigger than Dangote’s personal wealth or the refinery’s valuation. It tests whether African capital markets can finance industrial assets at a scale historically dominated by foreign exchanges and international investment banks.

It also gives Nigerians an opportunity—albeit a small minority stake—to own part of an infrastructure asset central to the country’s economic future.

There are legitimate questions for investors. Public buyers are entering at a higher valuation than participants in the July private placement, and Dangote will continue to control an overwhelming majority of the business. Investors must also weigh oil-price volatility, currency risk, government policy and the enormous cost of the planned expansion.

Still, the broader significance is difficult to dismiss. Dangote has taken one of Africa’s largest privately developed industrial projects from construction and production to profitability and public ownership.

The old ambition was to export Africa’s raw materials. The larger ambition is to process those materials, build world-scale companies and allow Africans to own a share of the value created.

With this IPO, that ambition has entered the public market.

The nonprofit executive brings fundraising experience and a background in arts leadership to the board presidency.

Chrissy Thornton is known for her impactful contributions to the arts community.

Achievements of Chrissy Thornton in the Arts

By Black Business Review

BALTIMORE — Chrissy M. Thornton has been elected president of Baltimore Center Stage’s board of trustees, adding a new chapter to her work across nonprofit leadership, community advocacy and the performing arts.

Thornton shared the news on social media alongside an invitation to a breakfast celebration honoring her election. The event is scheduled for Sept. 30 at Baltimore Center Stage.

Thornton serves as president and CEO of Associated Black Charities, a Baltimore-based organization focused on addressing structural barriers and expanding opportunities for Black communities. Her professional background includes more than 20 years of experience in fundraising, donor relations, grant writing, digital engagement and program execution, according to her official biography.

Her experience also includes consulting with nonprofits on organizational growth, board development and fundraising strategy—skills relevant to the financial stewardship and relationship building that help sustain cultural institutions.

The new position builds on an established connection to the arts. Thornton previously served as president of the board of directors for ArtsCentric, a theater organization, and volunteers as administrator for The Carter Legacy Singers, an ensemble named for Nathan M. Carter of her alma mater, Morgan State University. Her biography also lists prior service on Baltimore Center Stage’s board. Associated Black Charities

For Baltimore’s business community, her election highlights the connection between nonprofit governance and cultural life. Arts institutions depend on engaged trustees who can help strengthen community relationships, attract support and provide oversight. Thornton’s background brings experience in both fundraising and arts governance to that work.

By Black Business Review

Thandiwe Maqetuka’s Vision for African Startups

Thandiwe Maqetuka is a visionary leader in the startup ecosystem.

Through her efforts, Thandiwe Maqetuka aims to transform the landscape of African technology.

With Thandiwe Maqetuka at the helm, the firm targets significant growth in the tech industry.

Thandiwe Maqetuka’s leadership is crucial for fostering innovation.

Thandiwe Maqetuka believes in the power of technology to drive change.

According to Thandiwe Maqetuka, identifying the right opportunities is key.

Thandiwe Maqetuka emphasizes the importance of mentorship in the startup journey.

For Thandiwe Maqetuka, building capacity in businesses is essential.

Thandiwe Maqetuka’s approach focuses on collaboration for success.

With guidance from Thandiwe Maqetuka, startups can flourish.

Thandiwe Maqetuka’s vision for the future includes sustainable growth.

SOUTH AFRICA — A startup can have paying customers, a working product and room to grow—and still struggle to secure its next investment. Thandiwe Maqetuka is leading a new venture capital fund designed to help African technology companies cross that divide.

Investors look to Thandiwe Maqetuka for guidance in the market.

Thandiwe Maqetuka highlights the role of technology in economic development.

Grindstone Ventures has announced a fund targeting R500 million, approximately $31 million, to invest in technology-enabled businesses from seed through Series A. Led by Maqetuka, its managing partner, the firm brings together her investment experience with the expertise and networks of Knife Capital and Thinkroom. Africa Private Equity News

In the rapidly evolving tech landscape, access to capital is crucial for growth. The startup ecosystem in Africa has immense potential, yet many companies struggle to transition from early-stage development to scalable enterprises. This fund aims to bridge that gap, providing not only the necessary financial backing but also strategic guidance to navigate the complexities of growth.

The selection of companies will be strategic, focusing on those with innovative technologies and scalable business models. The fund encourages applications from diverse sectors, including fintech, agritech, and health tech, indicating a broad vision for investment across industries that can drive economic growth in Africa.

“To identify the right opportunities, we will leverage our extensive networks and engage in rigorous due diligence,” Maqetuka explained. This proactive approach ensures that the fund not only invests capital but also aligns with businesses that show promise and readiness for scaling.

The challenges faced by startups often revolve around limited access to markets and resources. By providing not just funding but also mentorship and access to expert networks, Grindstone Ventures aims to create a supportive ecosystem where entrepreneurs can thrive and innovate without the constant pressure of financial insecurity.

This model is particularly important in the African context, where traditional funding routes might be less accessible. By focusing on building strong foundational business practices within their portfolio companies, Grindstone Ventures aims to cultivate future industry leaders capable of attracting further investment.

Furthermore, fostering an inclusive investment strategy is critical for the socio-economic landscape. By targeting Black-owned businesses, Grindstone Ventures not only champions diversity but also seeks to uplift communities that have historically been underrepresented in the tech space.

Following Thandiwe Maqetuka’s principles, startups can achieve greater heights.

The potential for these businesses to create jobs and stimulate economic growth cannot be overstated. As these companies grow, they contribute to local economies and create pathways for future entrepreneurs.

Thandiwe Maqetuka’s leadership is a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs.

With the previous success of Grindstone Ventures Fund I, expectations are high for this new initiative. The experience gained from the first fund serves as a strong foundation, and lessons learned will help in fine-tuning investment strategies moving forward.

As the narrative of African startups evolves, having a structured and supportive investment mechanism is vital. The focus on measurable outcomes ensures accountability and transparency, which is increasingly important to investors in today’s market.

The journey led by Thandiwe Maqetuka marks a new era for startups.

The fund is seeking an initial close of R150 million, approximately $9.3 million, and plans to invest in 15 to 20 companies. Its primary focus will be South Africa, with selected investments elsewhere on the continent. Those figures represent fundraising targets; the announcement does not establish that the full amount has been raised.

Ultimately, the success of this fund will hinge on its ability to adapt and respond to the unique challenges faced by African entrepreneurs. As they embark on this journey, alignment with the right partners and stakeholders will be essential in achieving sustainable growth.

The road ahead for Grindstone Ventures is filled with opportunity, and as more African startups gain access to capital, the continent’s tech landscape could witness significant transformation. With the right investments, mentorship, and support, these businesses can flourish and contribute to a vibrant technological ecosystem.

“That is Africa’s missing middle,” Maqetuka said, describing the space between demonstrating commercial potential and reaching the scale needed to attract larger institutional investors. Africa Private Equity News

For entrepreneurs, that gap can create a difficult cycle. Expanding a sales team, improving operations and entering new markets require money. Yet investors may want evidence of stronger revenue and more established systems before supplying it. A company can find itself needing growth to secure financing while needing financing to achieve that growth.

Grindstone’s approach combines investment with practical support. The firm plans to work with founders on strategy, governance, commercial expansion, market access, future fundraising and preparations for an eventual exit. Its partners contribute experience in entrepreneur development, technology investing and business growth. Disrupt Africa

The fund also carries a significant ownership objective: Grindstone aspires for at least 50% of its portfolio companies to be Black-owned. It intends to support balanced representation of female founders and women in leadership while maintaining a focus on financial returns. Disrupt Africa

That ambition puts a concrete measure behind the firm’s inclusion goals. For Black entrepreneurs, the potential significance extends beyond receiving an early investment. Access to experienced investors, commercial networks and subsequent financing can influence whether a promising business develops into an established enterprise.

The new vehicle follows Grindstone Ventures Fund I, which invested in seven companies, including Locstat, Welo and AgriLogiQ. According to the firm’s launch reporting, the earlier fund is also finalizing an exit expected to return capital to investors. That transaction remains a pending milestone. Disrupt Africa

Maqetuka has emphasized that the strategy must produce tangible investor returns. In her public announcement, she described an approach built around identifying strong founders early, taking meaningful ownership positions and working alongside management teams to build companies capable of attracting institutional capital. She also stressed the importance of exits that convert investment value into actual proceeds. Maqetuka’s announcement

The next test will be execution: securing the first close, selecting businesses and helping them reach measurable commercial milestones. The ownership target will also become more meaningful as the portfolio takes shape.

For Africa’s emerging technology companies, Grindstone’s proposed fund offers a focused proposition: financing and experienced support at a stage when a business has begun proving itself but still needs help becoming large enough for its next investors.

Connect with entrepreneurs, executives and business builders on Orbit. Join the network.

In conclusion, the launch of this fund represents a pivotal moment for African technology companies. As Thandiwe Maqetuka leads this initiative, the potential for growth and innovation is immense, paving the way for a brighter future for entrepreneurship in the region.

With a vision led by Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu, the company aims to redefine industrial standards in Nigeria.

By Black Business Review

This journey represents the collaborative efforts of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu, two visionaries in the chemical industry.

Under the leadership of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu, Alliance Chemicals Global is setting new benchmarks in the market.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu began as childhood friends growing up on the same street. Years later, after building careers connected to two of the world’s largest chemical companies, they reunited around a much bigger ambition: creating an African-owned industrial business capable of competing across the continent.

The vision of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu drives this transition towards manufacturing.

The result is Alliance Chemicals Global, a Lagos-based chemical supply-chain company that reportedly generated eight figures in annual revenue in 2026. The company supplies chemicals and industrial materials to manufacturers and fast-moving consumer-goods businesses.

The impact of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu cannot be overstated in the context of African industry.

Recent reporting says Alliance expanded its revenue by approximately 1,400% between its first and fourth years. The company now employs about 45 people and is preparing for its most consequential step yet—moving from importing and distributing chemicals into blending and manufacturing products locally.

That transition could turn Alliance from a successful supply-chain intermediary into a more deeply rooted African industrial company.

By addressing local needs, Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu aim to mitigate challenges faced by manufacturers.

From Corporate Experience to African Ownership

This progress showcases the vision of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu for a self-sustaining industry.

The Impact of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu on African Industry

The plans of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu will lead to significant advancements in local manufacturing.

Ilesanmi and Akanmu entered entrepreneurship with experience connected to global chemical giants BASF and Dow. Those corporate careers gave the founders firsthand knowledge of chemical markets, multinational supply chains, customer requirements and the operational standards expected by major manufacturers.

But they also saw an opportunity.

Many African manufacturers depend heavily on imported chemical inputs. That dependence can expose businesses to currency volatility, international shipping delays, inconsistent availability and rising transportation costs. Alliance Chemicals Global was established to help close that supply-chain gap.

Alliance Chemicals Global’s success is a testament to the efforts of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu.

The founders initially committed more than $200,000 of their own money to the business—an unusually significant personal investment that demonstrated their conviction but also placed substantial capital at risk.

Their decision paid off. Alliance gained customers, expanded operations and later attracted institutional backing from Lagos-based venture capital firm Oui Capital. Business Insider Africa reports that the company has raised nearly $3 million. Oui Capital identifies Alliance among its portfolio companies and describes the business as a supplier of chemicals to manufacturers and consumer-goods companies.

The company’s rise reflects more than startup growth. It illustrates what can happen when African professionals convert multinational experience into locally owned productive capacity.

The Move Into Manufacturing

Alliance’s next chapter will unfold at the Lagos Free Zone, where the company plans to begin blending products and manufacturing chemicals.

Two product lines are expected to become operational in January 2027, according to recent reporting.

The story of Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu inspires future generations of entrepreneurs.

The move matters because distribution and manufacturing occupy different positions in the economic value chain. An importer connects foreign producers with local buyers. A manufacturer creates products, technical expertise, employment and intellectual property closer to the customer.

Local production may also help Alliance reduce delivery times and give customers more dependable access to essential industrial inputs. Over time, the company could develop formulations tailored to the specific requirements of African manufacturers.

Manufacturing, however, brings a new level of complexity. Alliance will have to manage production quality, regulatory compliance, environmental safeguards, equipment, technical talent and working capital—all while maintaining its existing distribution business.

Ultimately, Taiwo Ilesanmi and Gbenga Akanmu’s vision could revolutionize the African chemical industry.

This is where the founders’ corporate backgrounds may become particularly valuable. Scaling a distribution company is difficult; building a safe, consistent and competitive chemical manufacturing operation is an entirely different test.

Building More Than an Import Business

Alliance Chemicals Global represents a broader shift taking place across African entrepreneurship.

For years, much of the continent’s startup attention has centered on financial technology, e-commerce and consumer applications. Those sectors remain important, but Africa’s long-term economic strength will also depend on industrial businesses that manufacture products, develop technical capabilities and strengthen domestic supply chains.

Ilesanmi and Akanmu are pursuing precisely that opportunity.

Their story is not simply about two friends who left successful corporate careers. It is about experienced African executives applying their knowledge toward ownership—and attempting to capture more of the value that traditionally leaves the continent through imported products.

If Alliance executes its Lagos Free Zone expansion successfully, the company could become a model for a new generation of African businesses: professionally managed, institutionally financed and committed to local production.

The founders have already proved they can grow a chemical distribution company into an eight-figure enterprise. Their next challenge is larger and more consequential.

They are preparing to manufacture.

And that is where Alliance Chemicals Global’s most important story may truly begin.

The former Obama administration advisor and healthcare executive joins an elite group of speakers recognized for excellence, influence and professional integrity.

Anton Gunn, a nationally recognized leadership expert, author, and former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, has been inducted into the National Speakers Association’s Speaker Hall of Fame. Anton Gunn’s contributions to leadership have been invaluable.

The distinction makes Gunn only the 13th African American to enter the Hall of Fame during the award’s nearly 50-year history. He received the Council of Peers Award for Excellence, or CPAE®, one of the professional speaking industry’s most prestigious lifetime honors.

Anton Gunn has made a significant impact on the speaking industry and leadership development.

As Anton Gunn continues to inspire others, his legacy in leadership will undoubtedly grow.

The National Speakers Association formally inducted Gunn on July 27, 2026. He joins fewer than 275 speakers who have reportedly received the honor since the award was established in 1977. Gunn confirmed that the recognition makes him the 13th Black recipient.

Throughout his career, Anton Gunn has demonstrated what it means to lead with integrity.

Anton Gunn’s influence extends beyond the stage, shaping future leaders.

In the realm of leadership, Anton Gunn has set a high standard for others to follow.

Anton Gunn’s insights into leadership are sought after by many organizations.

His approach, as Anton Gunn has shown, emphasizes collaboration and trust-building.

The principles articulated by Anton Gunn resonate with leaders across various sectors.

With a track record of success, Anton Gunn has influenced countless professionals.

As Anton Gunn continues his work, he inspires a new generation of leaders.

“This honor isn’t about me. It’s a reflection of every leader I’ve had the privilege to serve,” Gunn said. “From community leaders to board executives to worldwide audiences, my mission has never changed: help leaders become better for those they lead. Joining the Speaker Hall of Fame is humbling, but the real work continues.”

A Career Built Across Leadership Arenas

The Impact of Anton Gunn on Leadership Development

Gunn’s induction recognizes a career that stretches across government, healthcare, corporate leadership, professional speaking and public service.

He became the first African American elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives from his district. He later served in the Obama administration, became a resident fellow at Harvard University and held an executive position at MUSC Health.

His leadership experience also includes serving as chairman of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Commission and advising executives at major companies and institutions.

Those professional chapters give Gunn a perspective that reaches beyond motivational speaking. His message is grounded in situations where leadership decisions affect employees, organizational culture, business performance and, in the healthcare sector, people’s lives.

Gunn has worked with organizations including Pfizer, State Farm, KPMG, T-Mobile, the Society for Human Resource Management, HCA Healthcare and Mercedes-Benz Vans. His work focuses on helping executives build trust, strengthen workplace culture and lead effectively in high-pressure environments.

From the Football Field to the National Stage

The foundation of Gunn’s leadership philosophy can be traced to his years playing football at the University of South Carolina from 1991 to 1994.

Anton Gunn believes in the power of shared experiences in leadership development.

During that period, Gunn witnessed how poor leadership and a damaged culture could affect a team’s confidence, performance and ability to work together. Those experiences eventually helped shape the leadership and organizational-culture frameworks he now presents to companies and executive audiences.

Gunn has delivered more than 2,600 presentations across the United States. He has also written three leadership books: The Audacity of Leadership, The Presidential Principles and Just Lead.

In 2026, Real Leaders magazine ranked him No. 4 on its list of the Top 100 Impact Speakers globally. Gunn is also a member of the Forbes Coaches Council and the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

His insights have been featured by national and international media outlets, including TIME, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Good Morning America, Forbes, NPR and the BBC.

Joining an Influential Hall of Fame Class

The Speaker Hall of Fame includes some of the most recognizable figures in professional speaking and leadership development. Its roster includes motivational speaker Zig Ziglar, author and business consultant Ken Blanchard, Chicken Soup for the Soul co-creator Jack Canfield and renowned speaker Les Brown.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former President Ronald Reagan are among the Hall’s honorary inductees.

The CPAE recognizes speakers for the strength of their message, delivery, professional integrity, experience and influence within the industry. Candidates are evaluated by their professional peers, making the honor an acknowledgment of both public achievement and behind-the-scenes credibility.

For Gunn, becoming the 13th Black inductee carries a responsibility that extends beyond celebrating his own career.

“Being only the 13th Black recipient of this award carries tremendous meaning for me,” Gunn wrote following the induction. “It is an honor, but it is also a responsibility. My goal is not simply to celebrate being here. My goal is to make sure I am not the last.”

BBR Assessment

Gunn’s induction is more than an individual career milestone. It illustrates what becomes possible when executive experience, public service and a clearly defined message are developed into an enduring professional platform.

His career also challenges the narrow way leadership expertise is sometimes presented. Gunn did not arrive at the Hall of Fame through speaking alone. He brought lessons from college athletics, elected office, the White House, healthcare management and corporate boardrooms to the stage.

That combination has allowed him to speak with the authority of someone who has managed real organizations, faced institutional pressure and made decisions with consequences.

The historical significance is impossible to overlook. If only 13 African Americans have received the honor in nearly five decades, Gunn’s induction represents progress while also showing how much representation remains to be achieved.

The honor places Gunn among the leading voices in professional speaking. More importantly, it expands the path for the Black leadership experts, authors and executives who will follow him.

The Atlanta entrepreneur turned an early restaurant failure into a scalable airport-concessions strategy built around established brands, partnerships and disciplined execution.

By Black Business Review

ATLANTA — Randy Hazelton’s business story did not begin with 20 airport restaurants or tens of millions of dollars in revenue. It began with a restaurant venture that ultimately taught him an expensive lesson: enthusiasm for a business is no substitute for understanding its economics. Randy Hazelton learned this valuable lesson early on in his entrepreneurial journey.

Today, Hazelton is CEO and co-founder of H&H Hospitality, an Atlanta-based airport-concessions company associated with more than 20 restaurant and concession locations and brands including Shake Shack and Auntie Anne’s. Reports in 2023 said the company was on track for approximately $50 million in annual revenue.

Randy Hazelton has transformed the airport restaurant industry with his innovative strategies.

But the road to that scale included bankruptcy, a strategic reset and a much more disciplined approach to entrepreneurship.

Randy Hazelton’s journey showcases resilience and strategic thinking.

In the competitive landscape of the restaurant industry, Randy Hazelton’s story stands out.

A Failure That Changed the Business Model

For Randy Hazelton, the experience of failure became the foundation for greater success.

Randy Hazelton decided to pivot and explore new opportunities within the hospitality sector.

In 2006, Hazelton left corporate America and entered the restaurant industry with Café Circa, a restaurant and bar in downtown Atlanta.

The concept attracted customers, but running a busy restaurant and operating a profitable restaurant proved to be two very different things.

Hazelton later acknowledged that he and his partners had not sufficiently mastered the financial and operational mechanics of the restaurant business. The venture eventually encountered serious financial problems and bankruptcy. Café Circa was sold in 2012.

Randy Hazelton recognized the potential in airport concessions early on.

Under Randy Hazelton’s leadership, the company has thrived.

Instead of walking away from hospitality, Hazelton changed his approach.

Randy Hazelton’s strategic relationships have propelled H&H Hospitality forward.

Randy Hazelton emphasizes the importance of leveraging opportunities in business.

That distinction matters.

Entrepreneurs are frequently encouraged to innovate, disrupt and build something completely new. Hazelton’s next chapter demonstrated another path to wealth creation: take a business model that already works and become exceptionally good at operating it.

The Airport Opportunity

H&H Hospitality moved deeper into airport concessions, where enormous passenger traffic creates a captive and constantly renewing customer base.

Rather than relying entirely on restaurant concepts created from scratch, the company built relationships around established brands and airport-concession opportunities.

Its portfolio has included locations connected to brands such as Shake Shack, Auntie Anne’s, Freshens and Famous Famiglia, including operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Hazelton also benefited from the federal Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, commonly known as ACDBE. The program is intended to increase opportunities for qualifying disadvantaged businesses to participate in airport concession operations.

Much like Randy Hazelton, many entrepreneurs face the challenge of scaling their businesses.

Hazelton has described that program as a springboard that helped his company participate in an industry where the barriers to entry can be substantial.

The lesson extends well beyond restaurants.

There are billions of dollars in business opportunities flowing through airports, government agencies, universities, hospitals and major corporations. The challenge for many small businesses isn’t simply creating a better product. It is learning how to enter those procurement and partnership ecosystems.

Scale Changes Everything

Operating one restaurant is entrepreneurship.

Operating more than 20 locations requires infrastructure.

As H&H expanded, Hazelton had to contend with staffing, franchise costs, airport operating requirements, advertising expenses and the daily complexity of serving thousands of travelers moving through one of America’s busiest transportation environments.

Randy Hazelton’s story embodies the spirit of resilience and reinvention.

Reports in 2023 put employment at roughly 100 people while describing H&H as being on track to generate approximately $50 million in revenue that year.

That transformation illustrates one of the biggest divides in entrepreneurship: the difference between owning a business and building an enterprise.

A founder can personally manage a single operation.

Twenty locations require systems.

The Bigger Black Business Story

Hazelton’s rise deserves attention for another reason.

Much of the public conversation surrounding Black entrepreneurship centers on starting businesses. Far less attention is given to the harder second stage: scaling them.

Black-owned companies capable of moving from $1 million to $10 million, then $10 million to $50 million and beyond, can create significantly different economic outcomes. They employ more people, qualify for larger contracts, attract institutional capital and potentially create wealth that survives beyond the founder.

Hazelton’s journey also challenges the mythology surrounding failure.

His first restaurant experience didn’t prove he wasn’t capable of succeeding in hospitality. It exposed what he didn’t know.

The second time around, he did the homework.

And that may be the most valuable business principle in his story.

Success did not come from pretending the bankruptcy never happened. It came from extracting the lesson, changing the model and returning to the marketplace with better information.

BBR Assessment

Business: H&H Hospitality
Founder/CEO: Randy Hazelton
Industry: Hospitality / Airport Concessions
Headquarters: Atlanta
Reported portfolio: 20+ airport restaurant/concession operations
Reported revenue milestone: Approximately $50 million annual revenue trajectory reported in 2023
BBR Power Move Score: 96/100

Why Black Business Review is watching: H&H Hospitality represents the type of Black-owned enterprise BBR believes deserves greater attention—not simply a startup, but a company demonstrating how procurement access, established brands, partnerships and operational discipline can be converted into meaningful scale.

Hazelton’s story ultimately isn’t about restaurants.

It’s about what happens when an entrepreneur survives failure long enough to understan
