SAN DIEGO — Investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Kwanza Jones has broken one of the highest ownership barriers in American professional sports, becoming the first Black woman to serve as a principal owner of a Major League Baseball franchise.

Jones and her husband and longtime business partner, José E. Feliciano, now jointly lead the San Diego Padres ownership group following unanimous approval from Major League Baseball’s owners and the closing of a transaction valuing the franchise at a record $3.9 billion. Feliciano has been designated as the Padres’ control person under MLB governance rules, while Jones is officially listed by the organization as a principal owner.

Should lower-handicap players be forced to give away three, five, eight—or even ten strokes—to higher-handicap players?

Many golfers accept the handicap system because it allows players of different abilities to compete. But from the perspective of competitive amateur golf, there comes a point where the system can feel less like leveling the playing field and more like penalizing excellence.

For golfers who have spent years practicing, taking lessons, improving their swings, and lowering their handicap, being required to give away a significant number of strokes can feel like they are being punished for becoming better players.

The Handicap System Was Designed for Fairness

To be clear, the USGA and the World Handicap System (WHS) were created with good intentions. The handicap system exists so golfers of varying skill levels can compete on relatively equal terms. A player’s Handicap Index is converted into a Course Handicap and then a Playing Handicap depending on the competition format.

But there is an important distinction between equitable and competitive.

The Reality Many League Golfers Face

Consider a common league matchup where a low-handicap golfer receives no strokes while their opponent benefits from multiple handicap strokes.

Imagine you’re a 6-handicap golfer.

You’ve spent years improving your swing, your short game, and your mental approach.

On league night you’re paired against a 16-handicap.

Under many league formats, you’re giving away ten strokes before the first tee shot.

That means your opponent can make several mistakes throughout the round while you may have to play nearly flawless golf simply to tie the match.

From a psychological standpoint, the lower-handicap player often feels pressure on every hole. One missed fairway, one three-putt, or one bad chip can erase the advantage created through years of practice.

The Variability Problem

Higher-handicap golfers generally have much wider scoring ranges than lower-handicap golfers. A 20-handicap may shoot an 88 one week and a 102 the next. A 5-handicap, however, is typically much more consistent.

Ironically, the World Handicap System acknowledges this variability, which is why different handicap allowances exist depending on the competition format.

A Better Solution: Flighted Competition

Rather than forcing large handicap differences in every match, many successful amateur tournaments divide players into competitive flights based on ability.

Under this format:

• A Flight competes against A Flight.
• B Flight competes against B Flight.
• C Flight competes against C Flight.
• D Flight competes against D Flight.

Handicaps can still be used within each flight, but the gap between competitors becomes much smaller.

Instead of:

4 Handicap vs. 18 Handicap

you would more commonly see:

• 4 vs. 6
• 9 vs. 11
• 16 vs. 18

Those matches tend to feel more competitive because the outcome depends more on execution than on a large handicap adjustment.

Professional Golf Doesn’t Work This Way

Professional golf doesn’t require elite players to give strokes to weaker competitors. The player with the lowest score wins.

While amateur golf should remain inclusive, league competition should also reward skill development. Golfers who dedicate years to improving their games should not feel disadvantaged because of their success.

League Directors Should Reconsider Their Formats

For leagues that emphasize competition, flighted divisions deserve serious consideration.

Potential benefits include:

• Fairer competition
• More meaningful championships
• Greater motivation to improve
• Better player retention
• Less frustration among low-handicap golfers
• Stronger competitive balance

Many club championships, state amateur events, and regional tournaments already use flights because golfers generally enjoy competing against players of similar ability.

Final Thoughts

The USGA’s World Handicap System remains one of the greatest innovations in amateur golf. It allows players of different skill levels to enjoy the game together while promoting equitable competition.

However, league organizers should ask whether routinely requiring one golfer to give away eight, nine, or ten strokes truly creates the best competitive experience.

Perhaps the next evolution of amateur league golf isn’t abandoning the handicap system at all.

Perhaps it’s organizing leagues into A, B, C, and D Flights, where golfers compete primarily against players of comparable skill while still using handicaps within each division.

When competition is built around similar ability levels, victories feel earned, improvement remains rewarding, and every golfer—from beginners to single-digit handicappers—has a reason to keep striving for a lower score.
