Donovan Woodberry Is Rebuilding MelaninCon’s Business Model — Without Waiting on Corporate Sponsors

Donovan Woodberry, founder of MelaninCon, at Champagne Reign in Washington DC

When the corporate checks started shrinking, a lot of Black events quietly folded. Donovan Woodberry did the opposite. He took MelaninCon’s business model apart — on purpose, and on his own terms.

Woodberry is the Founder and Executive Director of MelaninCon and Chief Operating Officer of A Celebration of Us, Inc., the Washington, DC nonprofit that produces it. Since its founding in 2021, MelaninCon has grown from 200 attendees at its debut summit to more than 800, becoming one of the capital’s signature gatherings for Black entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals. This year, instead of defending the old model, he rebuilt it.

The Model That Stopped Working

The old playbook is familiar to anyone who builds for the community: one big annual conference, one big gala, and a budget held together by corporate sponsors. When those sponsors retreat — as companies across the country pull back on diversity spending — the whole structure shakes at once.

Woodberry also saw the problem from the attendee’s side of the table. “Too many Black professionals were spending money they did not have to attend conferences that sent them home motivated but still broke,” he said. Rising ticket prices, repetitive panels, and networking that never turns into business had weakened the value on both ends of the model.

The Rebuild: Virtual, Free, and Smaller on Purpose

The new MelaninCon runs on three moves. First, the flagship conference moved to a virtual format, cutting the costs and geographic barriers that come with a single-city, big-room production. MelaninCon’s 2026 programming is 100% free.

Second, the platform now runs year-round. The ECHO Amplified program hosts free monthly virtual workshops on entrepreneurship, branding, mental wellness, leadership, and political engagement — and every session is then converted into a free, self-paced course on the MelaninCon platform. Panels become programs. Content becomes curriculum.

Third, the single large gala gave way to smaller, self-sustaining gatherings built to put capital directly in founders’ hands. Champagne Reign, held June 28, 2026 at Realm Rooftop Bar and Lounge in DC’s Shaw neighborhood, drew more than 500 registered guests for a live panel, a celebration — and the ECHO Pulse Pitch Competition, where three DC-based Black tech founders pitched live and one walked away with funding awarded on the spot.

“The support economy for Black events is changing, so we changed with it, on purpose and on our own terms,” Woodberry said. “In a climate built to make us smaller, intention is resistance. They can pull the funding and change the rules, but they cannot touch our resourcefulness or our intent. We are done waiting for permission to invest in ourselves.”

An Allocation Problem, Not a Resource Problem

Woodberry’s diagnosis is blunt: “We have all the resources in our community, we just have an allocation problem.” The rebuild is built around that idea. Instead of routing community money through a sponsor’s budget cycle, the model circulates it directly — free programming funded by the platform’s own ecosystem, pitch funding awarded in the room, and smaller rooms where relationships actually convert.

The ecosystem is substantial. A Celebration of Us reaches a combined digital audience of more than 351,000 followers and a 40,000-subscriber email newsletter, and The Posh Standard Media Group — the lifestyle and media brand Woodberry also leads — brings more than 160,000 Instagram followers of its own. That distribution is infrastructure most event producers rent. He owns his.

It is the same argument at the heart of BBR’s own series, The Blueprint: ownership over consumption — own the platform, and no one else’s budget decides what you are allowed to build. The work has not gone unnoticed at home: MelaninCon received a Mayoral Commendation from the Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC, recognizing its community impact, including years of service work alongside the summit.

What Comes Next

MelaninCon returns in 2027 under the new model — virtual-first, free to attend, and funded by a structure the community itself sustains. For Black founders and event builders watching their own sponsor conversations go quiet, the lesson is not to shrink with the moment. It is to redesign before you are forced to.

“This is bigger than one organization,” Woodberry said. “It is about whether our community will let someone else’s budget decide what we are allowed to build. We decided it will not.”
